Coleman’s Great American Backyard Campout at Bear Creek Lake

Who knew we’d be having a heat wave in June? Despite the 105º temps, dozens of families turned out for the Coleman Great American Backyard Campout at Bear Creek Lake in Lakewood, CO. Reagan and I were among them.

Thankfully, our new Coleman pop-up tent assembles in minutes. Just ask my friends who had already set it up for us by the time we arrived. Thanks, Vicki and Gene! Our 2 new air mattresses were blown up and the rest of our gear, including new chairs and sleeping bags were all waiting for us at our campsite. All we had to do was head over to the main area for Top Chef winner, Chef Hosea’s lunch demo and get ready to eat!

Chef Hosea was part of the prize package we won from Coleman, as were many other fun events awaiting us. Chef Hosea prepared a tangy summer salad at BLAT (bacon, lettuce, avacado and tomato) rolled up in a tortilla with a mayonnaise and sun dried tomato dressing. We all then broke into groups to prepare our own summer salad and BLATs. The Coleman crew cooked up our bacon for us using their camping stoves, one of which was given away to one lucky family during the campout.

After lunch, we put on our suits and headed to the lake for fishing and kayaking. It was so much cooler by the lake – we could’ve spent all day there.

For dinner, Chef Hosea really put on a show. He cooked up a delicious beef stir-fry and halibut steaks with a lemon, garlic sauce. Dinner was much faster to prepare for the groups as all we had to do was the stir-fry. Chef Hosea and his prep cooks prepared the halibut, lemon sauce, rice and cous cous.

It’s nighttime now, and it’s cooled down to the high 80’s. A bunch of us have our own little social gathering at our campsite while the kids play with the new flashlights. Eventually, some of the kids decide to make their way over to the main campfire for S’mores and take the little ones with them. They all come back happy, tired and sticky.

It was too hot to try out the sleeping bags, and my air mattress had a slow leak, leaving Reagan and I sleeping on the hard ground. Coleman shipped me a new one to my home within days. I love this company.

Our next camping trip is scheduled for the end of July at the YMCA of the Rockies, Snow Mountain Ranch. At 8,000 feet, we’re expecting to use our sleeping bags this time. Gladly.

Yeah! I am glad you got the new air mattress! Despite the heat, the weekend was awesome! I am looking forward to the next trip too. Those are some darn cute fisher-people (I have no idea what the politically correct term is :)
