Sometimes our most meaningful and unexpected conversations happen in the car. Such was the case this past weekend when from the back seat of the Volvo, Reagan asked, “Mommy, can we watch the sunrise together?”
I recognized immediately where this sweet sentiment had come from: one very mindful, monster movie.
That morning we had been to a sneak peak of the animated film, “Hotel Transylvania.” Seems a bit odd, I’m sure, that an animated movie about a hotel for monsters could stir such a desire, but, without giving anything away, let’s just say there’s more to the film than meets the eye.
I was in awe of my five-year-old’s perceptiveness. Such a simple request, but big enough to completely warm my heart.
Her words hung in the air (and my soul) for a few moments before I answered, “I would love to, Reagan. Thank you for asking me.” Truly.
I explained that we could watch the sunrise together every morning when we got up for school – it was happening while we were busy preparing for our day. It just took our own initiative to make time to enjoy it.
And so it is that my daughter and I now have a standing date to slow down and relish in this beautiful, daily gift – and each other – over breakfast each and every morning before the craziness of the day ensues. I highly recommend it.

Here via Perfect Moment Mondays and love that you and your daughter have started such a beautiful and meaningful tradition. I love getting up early to see the sun rise, but don’t do it nearly enough. When I was little girl visiting grandparents in South Carolina, my maternal grandma and I would always get up early at least one morning and go to the beach to see the sun rise over the ocean.

What a treasure and memory your grandma gave you to always hold onto. I love traditions, and hope this is one we will keep.
I love the way children sometimes make us be more present. We try to yank them into the future and thankfully they keep yanking us back to now.
I think your new Reagan-initiated ritual will be increasingly meaningful to you both. Special times like these are what fulfilling lives are made of.
