Our First Nutcracker

The Nutcracker

If I could have just one wish for my daughter, it would be that she could live a life of no regrets. I’m not exactly sure at what age I first experienced regret, but I do remember how old I was when I set myself up for it. I was five and I had just quit ballet. I remember being bored, and honestly not very good at it either. Couldn’t I just go straight to wearing the pretty costumes and dancing on stage in front of an adoring audience and skip all this fundamentals stuff?

I begged my Mom to let me quit and to this day I don’t know why she ever did. Maybe it’s because I bawled until she caved, the same way Reagan did just yesterday. At her ballet studio. In front of all the other moms.

But, I have a plan. Something that might’ve changed my mind when I was five. I am first going to show Reagan what she is giving up by bringing her to the Colorado Ballet’s production of The Nutcracker for the first time. If she still wants to quit after seeing this classic ballet, I can at least say I tried.

I have our tickets. Now, let’s just hope we get through the entire performance without any bawling, and I will have no regrets.
